Your gums surround and support your teeth and it’s important to keep them healthy. The first way to do this is through regular cleaning by your dentist.
Sometimes your gums need more specific care so Churchill Dental offers more serious forms of treatment of periodontal disease.
Gum disease is when microscopic bacteria burrow under the line of your gums and attack the gums and the bone that hold your teeth in your jaw. If gum disease is left untreated, a tooth can become loose or even fall out.
The cause of periodontal disease is plaque- the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on your teeth. These bacteria create toxins that can damage the gums. In the early stage of periodontal disease, called gingivitis, gums can become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, it is still reversible and can usually be treated by daily brushing and flossing.
In the more advanced stages of periodontal disease, called periodontitis, the gums and bone that support the teeth have become severely damaged. The teeth have become loose, have fallen out or had to be removed by a dentist.
